Q: Now, is it right or okay for a Christian to marry multiple wives?


Going back to the beginning, God made one woman for one man.

Mat 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

Mat 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Mat 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

1Co 11:9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

1Co 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.


1Pe 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.


Eph 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

There is nothing pluralistic about the above scriptures, so the concept of polygamy and polyandry cannot be said to be based on the word of God. So the talk of if someone wishes to marry more than one wife it is up to him, is not scriptural. If we choose to operate like that, then we are establishing no standard of any sort and that is contrary to the role of Christians and the Church in our society.

1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Where would such thinking lead us? … because we can’t stop at marriage. Soon, a person can choose to kill another and we would have to say it is up to him or her. We’re already doing that through abortions, by the way.

It is not up to us to pick and choose what we feel like doing, not if we are God’s children. We, of all people, are to seek that His will is done on earth as it is in heaven. If it was important to God that Moses should maintain the design of the tabernacle as a representation of the design in heaven, how much more should we unto whom the excellency of glory has come. There is a pattern that the union of a man and a woman in marriage represents before God.

Eph 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Who better to uphold that pattern but us?

2Co 3:1 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?

2Co 3:2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

2Co 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

2Co 3:4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:

2Co 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

2Co 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

2Co 3:7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:

2Co 3:8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?

2Co 3:9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

2Co 3:10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.

2Co 3:11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

2Co 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech.

The word translated “plainness of speech” refers to frankness, boldness, bluntness, assurance amongst other similar meanings none of which leave room for suggestions, opinions or equivocation. It’s either the truth or it is not. That’s how Jesus taught and we should do no less.
