Q: So, should this man who has adultery in his history be appointed to an office in the church?
Yes but on the condition that has developed the necessary leadership qualities or fruits that make him worthy of the office. He is no less qualified than any other person with any other form of darkness in their past. They are born again and so must be seen in that light. However, he must … must be seen to manifestly bear the fruits that are meet for repentance just like everyone else. Matthew 3:8:7:16-20. Check out this wisdom:
1 Tim 5:22 Do not be in a hurry in the laying on of hands [giving the sanction of the church too hastily in reinstating expelled offenders or in ordination in questionable cases], nor share or participate in another man’s sins; keep yourself pure. [Amplified]
But the situation is different if he was married to multiple women before coming to Christ. They are his wives, he can’t send them away and he shouldn’t be made to. But based on the leadership requirements for appointment to offices in church, he simply doesn’t make the cut. He can influence people positively for Jesus and as such lead them to live better lives and make better choices than he did but his Christian testimony is always going to be complicated by his family picture; it is a cross he must carry for the love of the Lord he has now claimed. The office is not an end to be pursued but it is a means to another kingdom objective and thus must be handled with care.
1 Tim 3:13 Those who do this servant work will come to be highly respected, a real credit to this Jesus-faith.
The real objective is the image or impression they create concerning the church of Jesus. I am certain there were folks with similar situations at Timothy’s and Titus’ stations which is why God inspired the Apostle Paul to give them these instructions.
I know we would like to say, what if this guy has all of the leadership qualities one could ever want but the truth is God is never short staffed; he has people unknown to us who are ready and willing to take up those mantles and fill those offices. He is able to raise up stones to do His bidding.
It is true that we are surrounded by people who believe and act differently and as such have multiple wives and yet are officers in the church of Jesus Christ. They will answer to Him so do not look to them as an excuse to change your stand on the word of God. Besides, truth is not determined by the number of people who believe it.
I hope I have touched all the points raised.
