Lessons from the Book of Joshua

Joshua 3

Joshua 4: 4 – Prep School

Joshua 4:4  Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:

For every assignment to be accomplished, whether divine or human, it takes preparation. I think we all know that.

What got me here is that Joshua knew to prepare some men ahead of time and so when a task came, he didn’t have to spend time at that point trying to get some men set to get the job done. The men were already set and they were simply assigned to a task at hand.

I guess he saw his time with Moses as the greatest investment that prepared him for the unimaginable task of leading the nation of Israel and he decided to get the next generation of leaders set for when God would need them.

Interesting thing in this generation is that many of us who are leaders don’t prepare people to take our work through the next generation and when the time comes, as it must, for us to hand over, we panic over the fate of the work.

The other side of the coin is that many of us who currently stand under the protecting shadows of the giants in our lives do not think much of the time when our “Moses” would be taken away and the work must continue. And as such, we don’t pay attention to the happenings around us as far as the work is concerned but rather are content enjoying the care provided by others.

This is why we have many people suddenly coming into positions of authority who don’t know what to do and so the work starts flailing and they start the blame game, or they are at the brink of their next phase in life full of questions rather than a clear line of sight into the future.

Think about it, how many of us know how our churches are run, or how our parents run our homes, or what our bosses at work do to keep the company going? Most of us have proposed to a lady or accepted a guy’s proposal before we start trying to find out what a relationship entails when all the time we’ve been surrounded by friends and relatives in one relationship or the other but never asked them what it was like.

Mentoring is not an option. John Maxwell says “one is too small a number to achieve greatness”. Be prepared and prepare others who will prepare others. I believe that’s how it was meant to be.
